Oocyte Donation

Oocyte donation was first successfully performed in 1984 and is a growing area of ART. Oocyte (egg) donation is a medical procedure in which a woman donates her eggs to another individual or couple for the purpose of assisted reproduction, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). The donated eggs are fertilized with sperm in a laboratory setting, and the resulting embryos are transferred to the recipient’s uterus to achieve pregnancy.

Oocyte donation has been proven to be a successful option for women who cannot conceive with their oocytes because of advanced age, diminished ovarian reserve, or genetic disease.

Oocyte donation is nowadays a well-established practice, currently applied in cases of heritable maternal genetic disorders, early perimenopausal and/or menopausal women, poor-responder patients, and in cases of multiple unsuccessful IVF attempts. Oocyte donations may also be offered to women who have experienced multiple pregnancy losses.

It is designed to overcome blocks to fertility caused by oocyte problems and is a logical extension of the technology of IVF. Allows the female partner to carry and deliver a pregnancy with her husband’s genetic contribution.

For most of these patients, egg donation remains an extremely successful and cost-effective treatment method for achieving a pregnancy.
